The 32-year-old victim of an avalanche in Granite Canyon on Sunday is still listed in critical condition.
A spokesman for LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah said Friday that Adam Smith remained in the intensive care unit five days after he was swept 2,000 feet down a steep couloir. The hospital could release no further details about Smith’s condition.
Meanwhile, friends have established a fund to help Smith in his recovery.
“It’s so touching that everybody is inquiring about him,” said Kim Hindman, a friend and coworker.
Smith works as assistant foreman for DHS General Contacting, which is building two new hotels at Teton Village.
He was backcountry skiing Sunday with three companions in Grand Teton National Park when the avalanche occurred at about 2:30 p.m. Smith suffered multiple injuries from the slide, which occurred in T&T Couloir, one of the Air Force couloirs in the lower portion of Granite Canyon just north of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort boundary.
He was flown from the scene to Teton Interagency Helibase, then transferred by ambulance to St. John’s Medical Center. Smith was later flown to LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City. His injuries include a broken femur, a fractured pelvis and puncture wounds in his side.
On Wednesday friends organized The Adam Smith Recovery Fund at Jackson State Bank and Trust. Though the fund is not set up as a tax-exempt organization anyone donating to it can still reap tax benefits by calling it a gift. For more information about those specifics, contact Hindman, she said.
One of the reasons the fund was set up is because Smith’s recovery has sparked so much interest in the community, she said.
“So many people are inquiring and want to help,” Hindman said. “Any little piece helps, even if it is just kind words.”
Indeed, a personal Web site organized so that friends can follow Smith’s progress shows just how much people care about his recovery, she said.
Though that Web site is being kept private for the time being, Hindman said that every message posted to it is read to Smith.
