Smoking ban to come before Town Council

Advocates of a townwide smoking ban will bring the issue before the Jackson Town Council at its regular meeting today.
The Teton County Public Health Board passed a draft ordinance in late April that would ban smoking in Jackson, but it cannot go into effect unless the Town Council passes it.
The proposed ban includes parks and recreational outdoor facilities such as baseball fields and private clubs. It also would prohibit smoking 20 feet from the door of any public place.
For the ban to become effective, the council would have to vote on and approve it three times at separate meetings and accept public comment.
Smoking in an area where it is prohibited would be a misdemeanor, punishable with up to a $750 fine or six months in jail. Usually similar misdemeanors draw tickets of $25, the board’s attorney, Keith Gingery, has said.
The only public bars that still allow smoking in Teton County are Horse Creek Station, Log Cabin Saloon and the Virginian. Others have voluntarily prohibited smoking.
In addition to the smoking ban, the council will consider a proposal from Greg Prugh Jr. to rezone two lots on West Kelly Avenue from neighborhood conservation mobile home park to urban residential and will consider a final guaranteed maximum price for the Jackson parking garage.
The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the Town Council chambers, 150 E. Pearl Ave.
