The Jackson Hole Museum on the corner of Glenwood and Deloney is hosting a free walking tour of historic downtown Jackson beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday. Everyone is encouraged to linger after the tour, which is not strenuous, and sample homemade goodies provided by Loretta Scott, Betty Karns Terrill, Bobbie St. Clair, Betty Benson, Judy Clayton, Ruth Hirsch, Dee Luton, Jeanine Mayer and Marge Ryan. There will be many longtime local residents to chat with, including Hazel Halling, Diana Karns Brown, Paula and Louis Leisinger, Loretta Scott, Barbara Daily, Betty Karns Terrill and Eleanor Lawton.
Please note the Senior Center will be closed on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.
I was curious about the “White Indian” books that Twila Goodrick was talking about last week, and she kindly provided the following edification, which I share here for others who might also have been wondering. Twila is married to Dee Goodrick, whose grandfather was Nick Wilson. Nick wrote the book The White Indian Boy about his experiences living with the Shoshone Indians as Chief Washakie’s blood brother, and later riding for the Pony Express. Nick’s son Charles A. Wilson later added a 13th chapter sequel about his life after coming to the Jackson Hole valley to live, and titled it The Return of The White Indian. The new book is a republishing of the combined books, with an added genealogy page of “Uncle Nick’s” family, including all three wives and their children. There will be members of all three families at the reunion this weekend and everyone is welcome.
Regarding the Wilson families’ plans for the erection of a new South Park Cemetery sign, the plan is for everyone to meet at the Rancho Alegre entrance on Friday at 5 p.m. Bobby Goodrick (Jackson-Wilson High School Class of ’79) has the paperwork and will pick up the posts and cement. Randy and Marta Wilson will bring the sign and drill, and John Wilson has the posthole digger. Steve and Peg Wilson plan to be there. Anyone else who is interested is welcome to come and offer input as to the exact location for placement of the new sign.
Added to the “Uncle Nick” Wilson family reunion schedule is dinner Friday after the sign erection at The Wort Hotel (which, by the way, is pronounced “wert,” not “wart”). Everyone is invited to gather at the hotel, and Charlie Craighead will be there to sell and autograph copies of his new book Meet Me at the Wort about the hotel’s history.
During the correspondence between Twila and myself, Twila wondered if I was related to George Clover who had bought her husband Dee’s hunting camp, which originally belonged to the Worts? Yes, in fact, he is my father, and my brothers Tom and Galloway Clover still run the outfitting business along with their sons Cheston, Thomas and David Clover with much help and support over the years from Martha Preston and Robin Parks Clover.
The Birthday Club met for the final time until September last week at the Snow King, where 16 members and one guest, Steve Despain, enjoyed lunch before their card game. The hostesses were Jeanine Mayer and Leanne Staley Moore. High scorer was Betty Benson, and low scorer was Nadene Robertson.
