Woman who hit runner in park pleads not guilty

by Amanda H. Miller
August 3, 2007

A woman who hit and seriously injured a woman jogging with her baby in Grand Teton National Park last month pleaded not guilty Thursday to unsafe operation of a motor vehicle.

Shannon Davis, 26, hit Michelle Benson, 37, with her car on Gros Ventre Road near Kelly on July 22. Benson was jogging with her 20-month-old baby, who was in a stroller in front of her. She was running in the same direction as traffic.

Davis was reportedly going 45 mph, the posted speed limit, according to Jackie Skaggs, spokeswoman for Grand Teton National Park.

Benson did not suffer any internal or life-threatening injuries, but she was airlifted to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho. The baby was taken to St. John’s Medical Center but was unharmed in the accident.

If found guilty, Davis faces up to six months in a federal jail for unsafe operation of a motor vehicle.

Federal Magistrate Jim Lubing on Thursday told Davis she should probably have an attorney. She said she planned to apply for the help of a public defender.
