Another bear is killed

By Katy Niner
August 25, 2007

A male black bear frequenting west-bank neighborhoods fell to its death from a tree Friday afternoon after it was drugged by a Game and Fish dart.

The 12-year-old, 290-pound bear, previously trapped twice in Grand Teton National Park, had been knocking over garbage cans and eating from bird feeders in John Dodge and Tucker Ranch subdivisions, said Leon Chartrand, state Game and Fish Department Bear Wise community planner. He found the bruin near Bentwood Bead & Breakfast and fired 12 shotgun cracker shells before treeing it.

A tranqualizer dart found its mark when the bear was 20 feet up. But the bear climbed another 30 feet before passing out and falling to its death.

It is the second bear to be killed in Game and Fish relocation efforts this summer, which has been twice as busy as last year because of a poor crop of natural foods. One other bear was killed on purpose because it was habituated to humans. Chartrand said the fallen bear likely faced the same fate because it had lost its fear of people.
