Authorities are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a man who led deputies on a high-speed chase Thursday that ended in a crash on the west side of Teton Pass.
Sgt. Tom Combs of the Teton County Sheriff’s Office on Monday said deputies have not apprehended the driver but are confident he is still in the area.
Deputies are seeking Silviano Safino, who they believe is about 30 years old, as a “person of interest” in the case.
They say Safino might have purchased the 2003 blue Ford Mustang involved in the chase from Adrian Alfonso Lorenzo of Idaho. Authorities have said they believe Lorenzo, whom the car is registered to, left the country long before Thursday’s incident.
Safino might have been the driver, investigators have said, but they have not confirmed their suspicion.
The Mustang passed a pair of sheriff’s deputies at speeds in excess of 100 mph.
Deputies gave chase, and the car crashed into a white Subaru and spun to the side of the road near milepost 12 on Highway 22. There were no injuries reported from the crash.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they saw a man in blue jeans and a light jacket run into the woods near the Mail Cabin Creek drainage. Officials from the sheriff’s office, Wyoming Highway Patrol and Grand Teton National Park, including a pair of search dogs, combed the area for more than three hours without finding the driver.
Combs said tips have been coming in.
A criminal background check revealed Safino was issued a moving violation in Idaho about two weeks ago in a different Ford Mustang.
Authorities also contacted Safino’s employer, who said the Idaho man had not come to work.
Deputies have obtained a search warrant for the car, which the sheriff’s office impounded. Combs said authorities had not yet conducted the search.
The Teton County Sheriff’s Office does not believe the fugitive poses a threat to the public but asked that anyone who sees a person walking along Highway 22 or who may know the whereabouts of Safino call the sheriff’s office at 733-2331 or Crimestoppers at 733-5148.
