Avalanche report up; Targhee eyes opening

By Michael Pearlman
November 13, 2007

The Bridger-Teton National Forest Avalanche Center began issuing regular avalanche advisories for the season and Grand Targhee Resort was closer to opening after a blast of high-elevation winter weather brought snow to the Tetons this weekend.

According to avalanche forecaster Bob Comey, the Rendezvous Bowl study station at 9,600 feet received about 10 inches of new snow throughout the weekend while the Raymer station at 9,300 feet and the 8,100-foot midmountain station received 8 inches. Settled snow depth is 22 inches at Rendezvous Bowl, 16 inches at Raymer and 11 inches at midmountain. Current avalanche danger is rated low at all elevations. Forecasters are calling for a chance of valley rain and 3-6 inches of mountain snow today, with unsettled weather continuing through Sunday.

Area-specific avalanche advisories are posted by 7 a.m. daily for the Teton, Togwotee Pass and Greys River areas at www.jhavalanche.org. A general advisory for Western Wyoming is posted by about 5 p.m. daily and includes updated snowfall totals, avalanche observations and overnight weather forecasts.

At Grand Targhee Resort, marketing director Susie Barnett-Bushong reported the resort received nearly a foot of snow on Saturday night and Sunday at the summit of Fred’s Mountain. Current base depth at Targhee’s 9,000-foot midmountain measuring station is 30 inches.

Targhee is scheduled to open its lifts Friday, and on Monday workers were grooming the slopes off the Shoshone beginner lift. Barnett-Bushong said there’s a possibility the resort could open the lift Friday but additional coverage is needed to open the upper mountain.

“There’s nothing poking through these lower runs at all, but I’d guess that they’d need another foot to 18 inches to open Dreamcatcher,” Barnett-Bushong said. “We’re definitely getting there, and if we can get some of this midmountain stuff covered, we’re close.”

Skiers and snowboarders should visit Grand Targhee’s Web site, www.grandtarghee.com, or call 800-827-4433 for updated opening information.
