The Teton County Democratic Party, anticipating an unprecedented flood of participation, has changed the venue for its county convention March 8 to Snow King Resort.
The Teton County Democrats had planned to hold their convention at the Virginian, which holds about 300 people, but moved it to Snow King because its venue can hold about 600 people.
“Based on the huge Democratic turnouts in states around us like Idaho and Nebraska, we are preparing for the biggest turnout we’ve ever had at a Teton County Democratic convention,” said Larry Hamilton, Teton County Democratic Party chairman.
The vote will begin at 4 p.m., but Democrats are urged to show up an hour early so workers can verify that they are eligible to participate, according to a news release from party leadership.
Party officials are reminding people who want to attend the convention that the deadline to register as a Democrat and participate in the convention is Friday. Anyone who needs to register or change a registration must do so at the Teton County clerk’s office by Friday. Students who are currently 17 but will turn 18 before the Nov. 4 general election can participate in the convention.
Each person in attendance will be able to vote for his or her presidential pick, which will be tallied and the results announced during the convention. Participants will then split into caucuses for each candidate to elect 17 delegates to the Wyoming state convention beginning May 24, which will also be in Jackson. At the state convention, all 300 delegates from around Wyoming will elect 18 delegates to the national convention who will vote for the Democratic presidential nominee.
Valley Democratic officials believe the eyes of the nation will be on Wyoming during the county conventions because it is the only state holding a caucus that day and the contest comes four days after pivotal votes in Ohio and Texas.
