Old Bill's match fund exceeds last year's

By Kelsey Dayton, Jackson Hole, Wyo.
September 2, 2008

More than $2 million has already been donated to the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole by Mr. and Mrs. Old Bill and 40 co-challengers.

The amount exceeds last year’s record breaking match of funds by $200,000, according to a press release from the foundation.

Mr. and Mrs. Old Bill, an anonymous couple that has pledged to donate $7.5 million in matching funds over 15 years, provided the initial $500,000 to Old Bill’s. Co-challengers supplemented the gift. As community members pledge money to their favorite charities through Old bill’s Fun Run, the fund matches gifts.

Donations are multiplied because of the match fund created by the co-challengers and Mr. and Mrs. Old Bill.

“Giving dollars now makes sense,” said Katharine Conover, president of the Community Foundation, in a press release.

The Community Foundation never has a specific goal regarding the amount of money it hopes to raise, Conover said. But this year the organization had expected a lesser amount because Teton Valley, Idaho, began a separate event, which raised more than $900,000, money which normally would have gone to the Old Bills fund, Conover said.

The total raised by Old Bill’s Fun Run won’t be known until several weeks after the event. Many donations come in the week of and after the run, Conover said.

Old Bill’s Fun Run for Charities will be Sept. 13. New to the event that will start at the Town Square will be a bike valet service provided by Friends of Pathways, Conover said. As in years past there will be a 2K, 5K and 10K race, as well as breakfast and entertainment.
