Moms want bus service

By Amanda H. Miller, Jackson Hole, Wyo.

Two mothers from outlying areas appealed to Teton County School District No. 1 board members last week for a bus route.

Stacy Knickelbein and Molly McSwain, who live in the Colter Bay area, said during a board meeting Wednesday that they represented about nine families with children who don’t receive bus service to school.

The fact that there is no service creates problems for the families, Knickelbein said.

McSwain has children that go to schools in Moran and in Jackson. She has to make eight trips a day to drop off and pick up her children, she said.

“It’s just a real hardship in life,” Knickelbein said. “It makes working difficult.”

The school district pays families for mileage when they live too far off the beaten path for bus service.

Superintendent Pam Shea said Ed Ahlum, the district transportation director, would have to crunch the numbers to see if a bus to the remote area is justified.

McSwain said families in Buffalo Valley traditionally have had more students than parents in the Colter Bay and Jackson Lake Lodge areas. But that situation is reversed this year, and she asked whether the district could consider changing its service to include both.

Shea said she has been working with Ahlum to find a solution. She said she would bring information to the board at its next meeting.
