Willie Neal, who served as a Wyoming delegate at the Democratic National Convention in Denver last August, was killed in a car accident while training for biathlon in northern Maine, according to a report from the Associated Press.
Police are investigating the accident that killed Neal while he was roller-skiing on a northern Maine road outside of Fort Fairfield, Maine, according to the AP. Police told WCXU-FM that the 19-year-old Jackson native was training with a friend at 8:30 p.m. Sunday when he was struck by a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Eric Lunquist of Fort Fairfield.
Police Chief Joseph Bubar said the cause is under investigation, but that alcohol is not believed to have been involved, the AP reported.
Neal and his brother, Eliot, were at the Maine Winter Sports Center training for biathlon in an attempt to qualify for the 2010 U.S. Junior World championship team.
Willie Neal recently served as an intern in the Washington, D.C., office for U.S. Sen. John Kerry. In November 2008, he served as a Wyoming delegate to the Democratic National Convention.
Jackson Hole residents William and Mary Neal are the parents of the Neal brothers.
