Authorities on Friday released the identity of a man who drown in a pond in Hoback Canyon.
Luis Arturo Velazquez Colin, 24, drown Thursday afternoon despite friends’ efforts to rescue him as he swam about 60 feet from a floating trampoline in the pond to shore, authorities said.
Velazquez moved from Eepitacio Huerta Michoacan, Mexico, northwest of Mexico City, five days earlier to work in El Abuelito’s Restaurant, Teton County sheriff’s deputies said.
Velazquez and friends went swimming during a birthday party. They were going back and forth to the trampoline, according to sheriff’s office reports. One friend was on the trampoline and the other was almost to shore when Velazquez shouted for help, the friends told deputies in separate interviews. Both friends swam to him as he went under and came up several times.
As the friends tried to help, Velazquez panicked and started to drag them under with him so they let go, according to reports. He didn’t come up again.
Jackson Hole Fire/EMS Battalion Chief Mike Moyer said Velazquez was not caught or tangled in anything in the water that could have pulled him under.
Sheriff’s Capt. Scott Terry said there was no indication alcohol was involved, but officials won’t know for sure until toxicology tests come back.
Coroner Bob Campbell said there was no evidence that Velazquez had any sudden medical problem.
“He just couldn’t make it to shore,” Campbell said.
The water was not cold by Wyoming standards, Moyer said. It’s likely Velazquez just ran out of energy and couldn’t finish the swim.
“It was a challenging swim,” Moyer said, “especially if you were going back and forth to the trampoline.”
Campbell said Velazquez’s body likely will be sent back to Mexico for services.
