County, state to talk about highway project

By Cara Rank, Jackson, Hole, Wyo.

Teton County commissioners will meet with the state highway department today to discuss including amenities like a pathway in a reconstruction project in Hoback Junction.

The meeting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in the commissioners’ chambers, 200 S. Willow St.

Bob Hammond, a project engineer with the Wyoming Department of Transportation, said the meeting will allow commissioners to tell his department what they’d like to see built during reconstruction of the junction of Highways 189/191 and 26/89.

“Mainly these are just context-sensitive amenities we put into all projects,” Hammond said. “With every project we do, we have a portion of money set aside for beautification or for amenities that a community wants.”

Hammond said he expects there will be discussion about building a pathway and a park-and-ride facility for START.

The reconstruction project will rebuild the bridge over the Snake River and install a roundabout at the highway junction.

Hammond said WYDOT is applying for federal stimulus dollars for the project. If that money is awarded, Hoback Junction reconstruction could start in the spring. If not, WYDOT will probably start on the project in another year, Hammond said.
