Man stabbed in fight

By Amanda H. Miller, Jackson Hole, Wyo.
November 10, 2009

One man was hospitalized with a knife wound Sunday and another was charged with felony aggravated assault after the two attacked a third man in his East Jackson home, according to police.

Jeffrey Keith Lewis, whose age was unavailable, was in good condition Monday afternoon in the primary care unit at St. John’s Medical Center, spokeswoman Karen Connelly said.

Police say Ronald Rutter, 40, told them he stabbed Lewis after Lewis and another man, Richard Lee Summerhill, 40, threatened him at his house on Pearl Avenue.

Summerhill is charged with felony aggravated assault. He is accused of threatening Rutter with a handgun and faces up to 10 years in the Wyoming State Penitentiary and up to $10,000 in fines if he’s found guilty.

Rutter called police about 8:30 p.m. Sunday, telling them he was attacked at his home and that he stabbed one of his attackers. He told police Lewis had been calling and threatening to kill him earlier in the evening.

Lewis showed up at Rutter’s house later with Summerhill and began shouting at Rutter, according to police reports. Summerhill had a handgun and pointed it at Rutter, threatening him, investigators say.

Police allege Rutter picked up an ax handle and swung it back and forth before hitting Lewis twice and dropping it. Rutter ran into his house to get a fishing knife and returned to his front door, where both men were shouting at him, according to reports.

Rutter told police he stabbed Lewis after Lewis hit him with the ax handle, according to reports. Rutter said he then ran out his back door to call authorities.

Police reports state Summerhill dropped Lewis off at the hospital before going back to his apartment.

Summerhill appeared Monday before 9th Circuit Judge Timothy C. Day. He said he would need a public defender.

He told Day he worked full time at Albertsons and wouldn’t be able to afford any bond, no matter how low it was. He said he needed to be released so he could return to work because he lives in Albertsons employee housing.

Deputy prosecuting attorney Clark Allan asked Day not to release Summerhill until he’d had a full drug and alcohol abuse evaluation and anger management assessment.

“The facts, as alleged,” Day said, “scare me to death.”

He set Summerhill’s bail at $10,000 in cash and said that if Summerhill does post bail he will have to return to court to get release orders before he can be let out of the Teton County Jail.

Teton County Attorney Steve Weichman had not filed any charges against the other men as of Monday afternoon.
