Occupancy dips a bit from last year’s level

By Emma Breysse, Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Every week the Jackson Hole Daily looks at the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce’s lodging barometer of bookings for the week ahead, which the chamber compiles Wednesday afternoon and posts online Thursday morning. Comparisons are made according to percent change, rather than the difference in percentage points.

Lodging numbers for the coming weekend are down from last year but remain roughly on par with the valley’s three-year average.

Valleywide, occupancy for Saturday is projected to be 58 percent.

Last year for the same weekend, the number was 15 percent higher, a 68 percent rate of occupancy. Over the past three years, this weekend had an average of 59 percent occupancy.

In individual areas, vacation rentals were the only category to see an increase, coming in at 66 percent, up from last year’s 60 percent.

Elsewhere, occupancy rates dipped compared with last year. In downtown Jackson, advance bookings for Saturday are at 63 percent, down from 71 percent.

For Teton Village, the dip was slightly larger, going from last year’s 90 percent occupancy to this weekend’s projection of 77 percent.

The dip was largest in outlying Jackson, where hotels are projected to be 29 percent full, down almost 40 percent from last year’s 46 percent.
