Petroff takes District 16

November, 3 2010
By Kevin Huelsmann, Jackson Hole, Wyo.

Republican Ruth Ann Petroff will succeed retiring lawmaker Pete Jorgensen as the representative for House District 16.

Petroff’s win against Democrat Len Carlman marks the first time a Republican has had control of this seat since it was created in 2002.

“I think people are looking for balanced representation,” she said Tuesday night. “I look forward to representing the county’s interests in Cheyenne.”

Petroff received 2,150, or approximately 56 percent of the votes cast. Carlman took in roughly 1,687 votes, or approximately 44 percent, according to unofficial results released by the Teton County clerk’s office on Tuesday... Full Story >>

About the 2010 state elections

Wyoming governor

Twelve candidates are competing for their party’s nomination for Wyoming governor. Teton County resident Leslie Petersen is running against Democrats Chris Zachary, Pete Gosar, Al Hamburg and Rex Wilde. Teton County native Matt Mead is running against Republicans Rita Meyer, Ron Micheli, John Self, Colin Simpson, Tom Ubben and Alan Kousoulos.
One candidate from each party advances from the Aug. 17 primary to the November general election.

HD-16

Republican candidates Ruth Ann Petroff, a local businesswoman, and Joe Schloss, a retired U.S. Department of Homeland Security agent, will face off in the upcoming primary to succeed Rep. Pete Jorgensen, who is retiring from the state legislature this year. The winner of the primary will take on Democratic candidate Len Carlman, a local attorney for a spot representing House District 16, which covers most of Jackson as well as portions of Teton Village.

HD-22

Republican candidates Emmett Mavy, a website designer, and Bill Winney, a retired U.S. Navy captain, will square off in the primary election for House District 22, which includes parts of Teton, Sublette and Lincoln counties. The winner of that primary will then face incumbent representative Jim Roscoe.

SD-17

For the past 16 years, Teton County voters have sent Jackson resident Grant Larson to the state Senate.
This year, with Larson retiring, three valley men are vying to take his place. Only the Republican primary election will be contested, as only one Democrat is running.
On Aug. 17, voters will determine whether Republicans Leland Christensen or Samuel Harrell will face Democrat Tom Frisbie in the November general election for Larson's seat in Senate District 17, which covers part of Teton and Fremont counties.

State auditor

Republicans Cynthia Cloud and Bruce Brown vie for the Republican nomination for state auditor. Sitting auditor Rita Meyer is running for governor.

State superintendent of public instruction

Incumbent Jim McBride faces fellow Republicans Cindy Hill, Trent Blankenship and Ted Adams in the race to be the GOP’s nomination in the state superintendent of public instruction race. Democrat Mike Massie is unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Unopposed state races

Republican Joe Meyer is unopposed in the Republican primary for state treasurer. Incumbent Republican Max Maxfield and Democrat Andrew Simmons, are unopposed in their respective primaries for secretary of state.
