Jackson Town Councilor Greg Miles’ name is on the ballot for the August 21 primary even though he dropped out of the race last week.

However, votes cast for the outgoing councilor won’t count, County Clerk Sherry Daigle said. She said election staffers will place notes in polling places informing voters of the change.

“It would cost taxpayers twice as much to reprint the ballots,” she said.

Miles announced on July 17 that he would not seek another term on the council.

Daigle said election staffers already had sent out ballots to residents living overseas and issued absentee ballots. They also had programmed ballot counters to tally Miles’ name, which means results still might include his name.

“We’ll post a notice in all of the ballot booths that he has withdrawn” Daigle said. County election staffers also have to inform voters that the term for the town councilor is four years, not two as the ballot says.

The ballot as printed tells voters to pick two councilors and informs them that the position is a two-year term.

Absentee voting, which allows residents to cast their vote before the primary election, so far has been slow, Daigle said. Polls opened July 12.

There’s only been a small trickle of voters, though election staffers expect the number of residents coming in to cast their votes early will increase in coming weeks.

Absentee voting will continue until Aug. 20. Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday in the basement of the county administration building, 200 S. Willow St.

Residents also can request a ballot through email or over the telephone.
