Blood drive

Gillian Heller and Betsy Engle donate blood in 2018 at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church. Socializing is part of the joy of giving, donors say.

Vitalant hosts its last blood drive of 2019 with a two-day event next week.

Donors can schedule a time to give between 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Oct. 16 or 7:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 17.

In addition to warm fuzzies for donating blood (and sugary or salty snacks post-donation), donors will also receive a voucher for a free pint of Snake River Brewery beer.

The two-day drives typically bring in 130 to 200 units of blood, roughly equal to a pint apiece, some of which comes back to the community by way of transfusions at St. John’s Medical Center.

Giving blood takes less than 10 minutes. Using an automated machine, it takes a little bit longer — around 25 minutes. Unlike having blood drawn for a health panel, donating blood does not require fasting, nor is it encouraged.

Sign up to give at or call 877-258-4825. The drive will be held at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, 750 Seneca Lane.
