The American College of Radiology has named St. John’s Medical Center a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.
Administrative Director of Diagnostic Imaging Michelle Kren said in a press release that St. John’s is the only such facility in the region, with the next one being 250 miles away.
To earn the designation, facilities must be accredited in mammography by the college or a Food and Drug Administration-approved body, and in stereotactic breast biopsy, breast MRI and breast ultrasound by the college.
The hospital press release said board-certified doctors perform peer-reviewed evaluations in each of the four modalities as part of the accreditation process. St. John’s will have to maintain the high standards it met to receive the certificate of excellence to retain the rating, according to the American College of Radiology.
The college also said it is “developing new initiatives to stay current with the science and technology that drive radiology practice as well as the clinical needs of the profession. In the future, centers may need to meet more rigorous requirements” to keep the “excellence” designation.
St. John’s representatives said they are simply happy to have their level of care recognized.
“I am extremely proud of the entire radiology department for earning this distinction,” Kren said in the release.
