A Kickstarter campaign completely funded DMOS Collective’s new Alpha Shovel in 11 hours, demonstrating Susan Pieper’s entrepreneurial success. The shovel is bigger and can handle a heavier load than its previous, more compact counterpart.

In just 60 minutes a Kickstarter campaign for DMOS Collective’s Alpha Shovel raised almost $8,000.

The project’s goal? $15,000. And that was completely funded in 11 hours.

Pieper described the shovel as the “top dog of the pack.” As of press time, the Kickstarter campaign had 738 backers and had raised $101,798. The campaign won’t close until Feb. 9.

The December fundraiser is just another indicator that Susan Pieper’s innovative outdoor tools company is taking off.

“We were thrilled,” Pieper said. “You never know what’s going to happen when you put something out there. I don’t care if you are an entrepreneur of a shovel company or having an opening day of a Broadway musical, you just don’t know.”

Dec. 13, the day the Kickstarter launched, was Pieper’s last possible drop date before Christmas.

“It was a nail-biter to the end,” Pieper said. “The video came together like butter, but it was down to the wire.”

DMOS Collective won Silicon Couloir’s Pitch Day in August, sweeping the competition with the Grand Prize and the Audience Choice Award. Pieper’s most recent innovation is the Alpha Shovel.

“It’s an adventure shovel that you can take with you,” she said. “It’s for your Wilson house. It’s for your car. It’s for your adventures up the Gros Ventre.”

When the shovel is released it will retail at a base rate of $129. Pieper said shovels will be delivered to backers in June, after samples are tested.

“Those samples will get beat on and used,” Pieper said. “And then any feedback, any refinements that need to be made, will be made with the tooling and the blade.”

DMOS Collective introduced its first product, the Stealth Shovel, on Kickstarter in 2015. But customers wanted something bigger that moved even more snow and dirt.

“We knew there was a market for a bigger shovel,” Pieper said. “And they wanted to use it much more for every day.”

She said backers of the Alpha Shovel were less concerned with packability and more with load. Unsurprisingly, most live in snow country.

“In positioning towards the driveway market, we struck a chord,” Pieper said. “I do think it is a profound thing. The market hasn’t been excited about a shovel since I don’t even know when.”

The Alpha Shovel is aluminum, not plastic, so it’s engineered not to crack in extreme conditions.

“I had a customer in Labrador, Canada who asked if the Alpha Shovel could withstand their negative 60 degree Celsius wind chill. Our shovel will.”
