UPDATE, Feb. 6: The Teton County Prosecuting Attorney's Office has decided to charge Sandy Olvera with misdemeanor battery instead of felony child abuse while the investigation continues.

Initial police reports listed child abuse as the violation.

Sandy Olvera, 21, was arrested Monday by the Teton County Sheriff’s Office.

According to police, the parents who paid Olvera to watch their 15-month-old boy noticed their son “wasn’t acting himself” when Olvera would come around. The family set up “nanny cameras” and observed her “striking him and handling him roughly.”

The boy had minor injuries, Teton County sheriff’s Sgt. Todd Stanyon said.

Olvera had previously worked as an infant teacher at the Children’s Learning Center’s Mercill location, according to its website. Her profile was removed from the day care’s website Tuesday morning. CLC officials said Olvera left the job seven months ago.

Executive Director Patti Boyd said the website had not been updated recently and had several other former employees on it.

Boyd said all employees of the Children’s Learning Center must pass background and fingerprint checks before being hired. She also said all employees have to take required training before they are allowed to work with kids.

“CLC is in no way linked to this arrest or these actions,” Boyd said.

Olvera has no criminal background, police said.

The Children’s Learning Center recently came under scrutiny when the Wyoming Department of Family Services put the Rafter J location on a provisional license after documenting several instances of noncompliance. Parents were upset the organization did not notify families about the noncompliance reports or change in license status.

The Mercill location operates on a separate license. Public records show two reports of noncompliance in 2018 at the Mercill location, both of which had to do with supervision issues.

Olvera is set to appear today in Teton County Circuit Court.
