The boardwalk to Abyss Pool, West Thumb Geyser Basin

A boardwalk that loops past Abyss Pool in the West Thumb Geyser Basin was closed for investigations after part of a foot in a shoe was found in the scalding hot spring in mid-August. The boardwalk remained closed into September as authorities worked to identify the remains, which they believe are related to a death on July 31.

After a monthslong investigation, Yellowstone National Park has identified the person whose dismembered foot was found floating in the Abyss Pool in August.

Officials did not say what led to the person’s death.
