When Lindsey Wennerth saw two of grizzly 399’s offspring meandering through the Solitude subdivision Thursday evening, her motherly instincts kicked in.

Seeing the 2-year-old subadults out on their own, knowing they’d been emancipated from their mother, proved emotional, Wennerth said. She and other wildlife watchers emphasized how 399 had been nursing her now sizeable offspring only a few days before.

Grizzly 399 cubs

A subadult male grizzly, likely an offspring of Grizzly 399, follows a bear that appeared to be its mother through Grand Teton National Park on Friday morning. The famous grizzly sow cast off her four cubs last week and was seen being courted by a male.

The sow thought to be Grizzly 399 crosses the Teton Park Road just north of Moose on Friday morning in front of a few dozen onlookers in Grand Teton National Park. The bear was followed by a subadult male, likely one of her four offspring that she had cast off in the days prior.
