A longtime Jackson real estate agent has been nominated from more than a million Realtors to receive a national service award.
Ed Liebzeit of Jackson Hole Sotheby’s International Real Estate is one of 10 members of the National Association of Realtors to be nominated for a NAR Good Neighbor Award for their contribution to their communities.
Liebzeit said Monday he was “very honored and humbled” to be nominated for an award that “recognizes people who are doing more than just selling real estate in the community.”
Liebzeit is involved in a number of Jackson nonprofits, including Rotary and the American Legion, but his nomination was specifically for his role in the Community Safety Network, an organization that works with victims of domestic violence.
Liebzeit and his wife, Carole, both volunteer for the organization. He has been on the board for eight years, serving as chairman for the past six.
“It’s not an organization or a role that you spend a lot of time high-fiving and celebrating, because you’re dealing with people who are, unfortunately, victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking,” Liebzeit said. “But we know we’re making a difference in people’s lives in the services we offer.”
Community Safety Network operates a safe house for victims. It recently added a new bedroom and plans to increase the transitional housing units it offers. The group also has a hotline and offers education programs, including to middle and high school students in Teton County School District.
The group receives federal, state, county and town of Jackson support, but most of its budget comes from private donations, Liebzeit said. If he is among five winners chosen from the 10 nominees the network will receive $10,000, and if he receives the most online votes another $1,000 will be added. The second five in the voting get $2,500 for the groups they represent.
The nominees came from among 1.3 million NAR members, “a big group” of people who do a lot of good work where they live, Liebzeit said. The Good Neighbor Award has awarded more than $1 million to projects for which Realtors work.
Liebzeit said his nomination is “exciting news” not just as a personal honor but because “it will increase people’s awareness of intimate partner violence, which is an issue even in our beautiful community.”
Liebzeit is a Vietnam vet and has lived in Jackson since 1997. He was president of the Sotheby’s group in Jackson for more than three years.
