Southern Teton Area Rapid Transit’s plan for microtransit service for the eastern part of the town of Jackson took a step with the board’s selection of Downtowner LLC as its preferred vendor.

Beginning later this year, the service will offer free on-demand rides in smaller vehicles between the western boundary of Karns Meadow and the town’s eastern limits.

“Providing seamless public transport, riders will be able to schedule service through an app from their location to any destination in East Jackson, including to START’s transit hub for connection to commuter and local and Teton Village routes,” a press release said.

START said it will begin contract discussions with Downtowner immediately. It anticipates launching the service, and an on-demand system managed through a rider reservation app, on Nov. 27.

Community outreach efforts and education sessions will be offered to teach people how to use the reservation app and the system.

Downtowner has experience in resort communities such as Aspen, Colorado, and North Lake Tahoe, California, the release said.
