Kate Budge loves riding and everything about horses. I caught up with her at the Teton County Fair, where she had just finished a competition at the 4-H Horse Show and was on her way to another one.
My first impression of her was a teenager who showed confidence and was also respectful — a well-raised young woman. For the second straight year she earned the most points and was named All Around Horse and Rider. I am certain that we will be hearing good things about Kate in the future.
Q: What is the name of your 4-H club, and how long have you been a member?
Kate: I have been a member of 4-H for 10 years. I actually belong to two clubs, Teton Range Riders and Snake River Cattle. I am the president of both clubs.
Q: What is the name of your horse?
Kate: Scarlett is my horse and she is 6 years old. I have had her for two years.
Q: Besides participating in the horse show, are there other fair activities that you are involved in?
Kate: I have two steers, Blackberry and Raspberry, that I will be showing. All of my steers came from the Glenn Taylor Ranch. My dad and brother also raised steers, and they came from the Taylor Ranch too.
Q: What will you do with the money that you earn from selling the steers?
Kate: The money will be used for college. I want to attend Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne and study financial management.
Q: You have had a busy summer. Please expand on that. Don’t be shy. Tell us about the scholarship and other amazing things you have been doing.
Kate: I was one of 16 4-H members from the state of Wyoming chosen to attend The Citizen Washington Focus trip. We went to Washington, D.C., for a week and it was incredible.
I attended Ranch Horse Camp in Cheyenne. Scholarships were awarded to three standout seniors for the 2023-24 school year at Laramie County Community College. I received one of the scholarships.
I won the Idaho High School Rodeo Queen title, which qualified me to run for the National High School Queen Contest in Gillette. There were 44 contestants, and I was first runner-up.
Q: Tell us about your family.
Kate: I live in Kelly with my parents, Joey and Nicole. I have an older brother, Casey, who attends the University of Wyoming.
Q: Tell us something about yourself that others might not know.
Kate: I am a seventh-generation Jackson Hole native. My grandparents are Danny and Jane Taylor Budge, and my great-grandmother is Bonnie May Budge. My ancestors homesteaded not far from my home in Kelly.
