It wasn’t like I was embarking to the heart of the Chacabuco Valley, trekking between General Carrera Lake to the north and Cochrane Lake to the south. I was simply going to Arkansas and still forgot to pack an awfully large list of small essentials. Oh, I had a windproof jacket, fleece and good shoes. I had my fancy water bottle, the one that didn’t make me look like I was out on a photo safari to discover recently rewilded jaguars in South America. I’d simply be on a commuter jet for two hours and then, after disembarking, enjoying a late night snack of red beans and rice ordered at the Popeye’s drive-through window. I really didn’t need much, but do you know what I forgot? The one thing I always need. A pen. I forgot a plain old pen.
I couldn’t buy one at the airport. I tried. The snack shop didn’t sell them and the souvenir shop didn’t have one either. Not even one of those chunky pens with four different colors of ink and liquid in the upper potion with floaty glitter swooshing around. Here I was embarking on another great Southern adventure penless, necessitating me to remember things, to commit details to memory.
