La Rojita

La Rojita

May showers bring Cinco de Mayo margaritas on one of my favorite days of the year.

Cinco de Mayo celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. Also known as Battle of Puebla Day, May 5 is an unofficial start date for summer in the United States and a chance to begin thinking about refreshing margaritas.

Look past the 5th of May to make delicious cocktails all summer long — from tequila drinks made with fresh juices and purées to a refreshing canned version.

San Francisco bartender H. Joseph Ehrmann, chief mixology officer for Fresh Victor, recommends these tasty tequila cocktails made with cold-pressed juice-based mixers.

Pica Pina Margarita

1.5 ounces Fresh Victor Pineapple & Ginger Root

1.5 ounces Fresh Victor Jalapeno & Lime

1.5-2 ounces blanco or reposado tequila

In a cocktail shaker, add all the ingredients, fill the shaker with ice, shake well (to chill and dilute) and strain over ice in a 10- to 12-ounce glass. Add pineapple wedge, lime wheel and/or jalapeno wheel garnish and serve.

Toasty Cactus Pear Margarita

(can also be made nonalcoholic)

3 ounces Fresh Victor Cactus Pear & Pomegranate

1.5-2 ounces reposado or anejo tequila

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (or half an ounce cinnamon syrup)

In a cocktail shaker, add all ingredients, fill the shaker with ice, shake well (to chill and dilute) and strain over ice into a 10- to 12-ounce glass. Add cinnamon stick garnish and serve.

Pepino Margarita

3 ounces Fresh Victor Cucumber & Lime

1.5-2 ounces blanco or reposado tequila

In a cocktail shaker, add all ingredients, fill the shaker with ice, shake well (to chill and dilute) and strain over ice into a 10- to 12-ounce glass. For the garnish, make a slit in a cucumber wheel from the center to the edge, squeeze lime juice over it, dip the half opposite of the cut into chili powder, and stick it on the rim to serve.
