Big Sam's Funky Nation

Big Sam’s Funky Nation will play the Pink Garter Theatre on Aug. 3. Tickets go on sale Wednesday at noon.

Some good, old-fashioned New Orleans-style funk is making its way to Jackson.

The Pink Garter Theatre announced Monday that Big Sam’s Funky Nation, a band led by Sammie Williams of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, is set to play its stage Aug. 3. Tickets for the show go on sale Wednesday at noon.

Williams, a trombone player, grew up in New Orleans, where he cut his teeth playing on the streets. Since then, he’s seen years where he’s played over 300 shows with the Dirty Dozen, released five albums with Big Sam’s Funky Nation and played stages ranging from those at New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival to Bonnaroo and South by Southwest.

The Pink Garter also announced that Head to Head, a local DJ act, will return to the theatre June 28. Head to Head will be joined by DJ Murda Child, a San Francisco-based record spinner.

Tickets for the Head to Head show are free.
