Your first introduction to Classic Air Medical could be as their team is about to save your life. As an air medical transport company, that is the heart of their work.

But, hopefully, that first introduction to Classic Air Medical would be much less high-pressure — like when one of their medics leads a school workshop on hands-only CPR or one of their nurses meets with a Boy Scout troop to talk about the Stop the Bleed first-aid campaign.

Reaching out into the community, beyond medical emergencies, is crucial to the company’s mission. 

“We treat all of our communities like our family,” said Wade Patten, the company’s Chief Administrative Officer.

Although Classic Air Medical has been around for 32 years and operates in seven states in the Intermountain West, including locations across Wyoming, it has only been a few weeks since they established a permanent base in Jackson. 

A fixed-wing aircraft now lives at Jackson Hole airport, maintained by a staff of 16. That’s four nurses, four medics, four pilots and a mechanic. Ideally, the aircraft will help get patients who need urgent care out of St. John’s Hospital quickly and safely.

But Classic Air Medical prides itself on its commitment that extends far beyond hospitals and airport tarmacs, a commitment which is enshrined in its new campaign: “Classic Cares.”

Air medical transport combines two of the costliest fields in the United States for consumers: aviation and healthcare. Classic Air Medical is keenly aware of this reality and actively tries to counter those costs. 

According to Director of Customer Relations Chad Bowdre, the average out-of-pocket payment for a patient is less than $200. Part of their Classic Cares model includes a patient advocate to assist patients with the financial aspect of medical air transport. 

“The medics and nurses take care of them medically and the pilots take care of getting them to their location safely,” Bowdre said. “Our Patient Advocates take care of them financially by maximizing the insurance payments and minimizing the patients out-of-pocket expense.”
