Heather Jansch’s miniature sculptures of elephants inspired Mariam Diehl to have all of Diehl Gallery’s summer programming benefit the Elephant Crisis Fund. The Elephant Crisis Fund is a joint initiative of Save the Elephants and the Wildlife Conservation Network, in partnership with the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. It has zero overhead, meaning 100 percent of donations to the fund goes directly to saving elephants.
Heather Jansch always loved drawing horses. One day, though she can’t say where the inspiration came from, she decided to sculpt life-size horses from driftwood. Since then, many artists have imitated her style. To make her work able to live outside, she started casting her driftwood sculptures into bronze, like “Apollo,” shown here.
Claire Brewster makes delicate, intricate paper cut-outs of birds and plants from vintage materials. “Are You Going My Way (Great Horned Owl)” was cut out of a vintage map of land classification and density of standing timber in the Bald Mountain Quadrangle.

All summer Diehl Gallery has invited collectors to donate 5 percent of their purchases to the Elephant Crisis Fund. The artist who inspired the partnership, Heather Jansch, will present her first solo U.S. exhibition at Diehl during the Fall Arts Festival.
The British sculptor is best known for her large-scale driftwood and bronze sculptures of horses, one of which will be on display at the contemporary gallery during the festival.
