Torin Johnson

Torin Johnson, 11, of the Jackson Hole Evolution, catches air last week during his title-winning run at Kicking Horse Resort in the IFSA North American Junior Freeride Championships.

Torin Johnson knew he needed to go big or go you-know-where. So that’s exactly what the 11-year-old Wilson Elementary School student and Jackson Hole Evolution athlete did as he stared down the mountain on his final run on April 4 at Kicking Horse Resort in British Columbia.

The youth mountain skier had finished ninth in qualifying a day earlier. “So I knew I had to go a bit bigger,” Torin said. “I did a line that nobody else did, and I skied it clean.”

Torin Johnson stands atop the podium at Kicking Horse Resort last week after placing first out of 43 in the 12-and-under male ski division. After his runs it took several hours for him to learn he’d won. “It was shocking,” he said. “I had no idea I was in first place.”

Wyatt Gentry

Wyatt Gentry, 16, of the Jackson Hole Evolution, rides the Stairway to Heaven Lift at Kicking Horse Resort in British Columbia with coach Eric Space. Gentry placed fourth in the 15-to-18 male ski category at last week’s 2023 North American Junior Freeride Championships.
