The Jackson Moose varsity hockey team swept two games apiece from the league-leading Gillette Grizzlies and the Casper Oilers last weekend at Snow King Sports and Events Center to put itself in position to win its second straight Wyoming Amateur Hockey League title and its third in four years.
“I think our chances are high, if we play like that,” senior goalie Sam Smith said after Jackson’s 6-3 win over Casper on Saturday night. “I’m excited.”
The 18-and-under Jackson Youth Hockey squad held its senior night Friday for the six departing team members who hope their season, and high school careers, end with another WAHL title in Cheyenne next month. Then they went out and beat Gillette — the same team they beat right here in Jackson last year for the state title — 3-2.
Juniors Bryce Johnson and Hayden Clark and sophomore Jack Conroy scored goals in the victory, and then Conroy scored two more on Saturday afternoon, along with goals by senior Harry Marvin and Bryce’s twin brother, Carter Johnson, for another win, 4-2, over Gillette.
Gillette is now 16-4 in the league’s A division standings, with Jackson right behind at 13-3.
The U18 Moose team is 10-0 at Snow King this season and was thankful to be home after three road tournaments in December to Sun Valley, Idaho, and Bozeman and Missoula, Montana, where Jackson played some of the best high school hockey teams in the country.
But that only helped the Moose, senior captain Jack Jenkins said.
“Totally,” Jenkins said in the locker room after Saturday night’s win over Casper. “The level of hockey up there is very good,” he said of the Montana road trips. “It’s a lot better than around here. So it was good to get some better teams to get prepared for this and hopefully win state. It was a great preparation, although we didn’t win as many.”
But win the Moose did on Saturday, as well as the rest of the weekend.
Casper took a 1-0 lead Saturday night on a goal by Preston Hytrek just a couple of minutes into the game, a lead the Oilers held going into the second period.
Senior Liam Sullivan scored from the left side of the goal, in front of a loud Jackson student section, to knot the game at 1-1 with 15:07 left in the period. Casper went back up less than a minute later on a goal by Braxton Thomas for a 2-1 Oilers lead.
The Moose tied it again at 2-2 with 10:44 left in the second when Conroy scored on an assist from Stewart Sullivan. And the hosts went up for good with 8:47 left when Bryce Johnson scored on an assist from Jenkins.
Jackson scored three goals in the final period, the first by junior Hayes Millham with 7:21 left as he took the assist from Carter Johnson, who had circled the net.
“It was all Carter on that one,” Millham said.
Jenkins then scored on a slapshot from the right side that got behind the Oilers’ goalie with 5:53 left for a 5-2 Moose lead. Casper scored again about 10 seconds later. But junior Nick Korpi made it 6-3 Jackson with 1:08 left on another assist from Sullivan.
“It was awesome,” Smith said. “That was the last home start for me, so it meant a lot to win that one.”
Jackson beat Casper again, 7-2, on Sunday morning behind two goals each by junior Alex French and Bryce Johnson, plus goals from Millham, Carter Johnson and Korpi.
The Moose have four games left, two at Casper and two at Douglas on the first weekend in February before the state playoffs later in February in Cheyenne.
