Nordic skiers excel in Boise
Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Club Nordic teen skiers were in Idaho last weekend for the Boise Junior National Qualifier at Bogus Basin Ski Area.
Notable performances at the Saturday classic races included Matthew Finkel, who took first place in the U14 boys’ 3.75-kilometer race in 14 minutes and 31.9 seconds, and Callum Kuszak, who took third in 14:54.5.
Lena Poduska took first in the girls’ U16 7.5K in 24:41.1, while Abby Murphy was third in 26:12.9.
Nate Streubel took third in the boys’ U16 7.5K in 23:23.7. Lucas Wilmot was second in the U18 boys’ 7.5K race in 22:18.2, while Peter Warner was third in 22:19.9. Mason Wheeler was second in the boys’ U20 7.5K race in 22:01.2.
At the Sunday skate Olin Hugo took first in the U12 boys’ 3K in 7:21.3.
Finkel took first again in U14 boys’ 3K in 8:33.5, while Jack Mayer was third in 8:42.0, Karsten Bessonette was fifth in 8:56.9, and Zach Baker was eighth in 9:11.5.
Anna Baxter was fifth in the girls’ U14 3K in 9:32.5.
Poduska took first in the girls’ U16 5K in 14:53.7, while Murphy was third in 15:46.1.
Wilmot took third in the boys’ U18 10K in 28:28.9, Sam Sinclair was eighth in 29:31.0, Alyosha Billimoria was ninth in 29:40.2, and Warner was 10th in 29:43.8.
Aurora Stiles took eighth in the U18 girls’ 10K in 33:26.8.
Kauf takes 2nd at World Cup event
Olympic silver medalist Jaelin Kauf, who grew up in Alta, took second place with a score of 77.35 last Thursday in the women’s moguls at the 2023 Intermountain Healthcare Freestyle International Ski World Cup at Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah.
“I was so stoked I was able to lay down some really solid and speedy runs and keep it together,” Kauf said, according to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard website. “This is such a challenging course, it always is. It seems like it was a little more challenging this year for some reason. But I was focused on landing that top air and getting on my toes. I can handle little bobbles or hits in that position.”
It was Kauf’s 70th World Cup start and her 22nd podium. Jakara Anthony of Australia won the event.
Kauf also finished second on Saturday in the dual moguls. France’s Perrine Laffont took first.
Nield, McBride 1st in Big Piney
Jackson Hole Broncs wrestlers Kaden Nield and Tai McBride took first place in their divisions Friday at the Bridgerland Tournament at Big Piney High School.
After pinning his own teammate, Rice Robinson, in the 220-pound division, Nield defeated Zack Murphy of Big Piney. Robinson took fourth.
McBride, the sophomore who is now 22-0 on the season, won her only match.
Senior Ayden Gralund took second at 145 pounds, losing the title match to Gabe Emery of Kemmerer. Junior Justin Castagno took second at 182 pounds, losing to Mathew Foster of Rock Springs.
Logan Ward took third at 132 pounds, defeating Bradley Rodda of Big Piney, at 126 pounds. Freshman Hunter Boss took fourth place at 126 pounds, losing the third-place match to Kasen Hill of Lyman.
Senior Tristan Sasser took fifth place at 285 pounds, defeating Kian Pelham of Big Piney. Junior Thomas May took seventh place at 152 pounds, defeating Robert French of Big Piney.
Alex Brown took eighth place at 160 pounds, losing to Braxton Pope of Kemmerer.
Freeskiers fly at Grand Targhee
Skiers and riders from both sides of the Tetons excelled at the IFSA Big Mountain Junior National meet at Grand Targhee Resort last weekend.
Lucille Lambert of the Jackson Hole Evolution took first place in the 12-14 female ski event with a score of 62.26. Ava Evans of the Teton Valley Ski Education Foundation took second with a score of 60.90. Sophia Lambert of the Evolution was fifth with a score of 56.96, and Maddigan Adams of the Evolution was sixth with a 53.30.
In the 12-14 male ski event, Cooper Melanson of the Evolution took fourth with a score of 62.67. Owen McGowan of the Evolution took sixth with a 62.33. Ashe Bessette of the Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Club took 10th with 59.33.
Skylar Hare of the Teton Valley Ski Education Foundation took first in the 12-14 female snowboard event with a score of 35.77. Sydney Radtke of the Grand Targhee Ski and Snowboard Club took second.
Ainsley McBean of the Evolution took fourth in the 15-18 female ski event with a 60.80.
Kai Jones of Teton Valley took second in 15-18 male ski with a score of 70.70. Jack Kilmain of the Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Club was third with 70.36. Luke Miele of the Evolution took fifth with 68.86. Will Beck of the Evolution took eighth with 67.90, and Miles Coleman of the Evolution took 10th with 59.00.
Willow Newton of Teton Valley was second in the 15-18 female snowboard with a score of 19.17.
Gage LeMaster, an independent, took second in 15-18 male snowboard with a 55.30, and Tiernan Schultdt of the Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Club took third with a 53.53.
