Broncs Alpine skiers race vs. West
After winning their latest Wyoming state titles, the Jackson Hole High Alpine teams headed to Oregon last weekend to race in the Western U.S. High School Alpine Championships at Mount Hood Skibowl.
Both the boys’ and girls’ teams placed fourth among teams from Wyoming, Oregon, Colorado, Nevada and Minnesota.
Taylor Smith, fresh off winning slalom and giant slalom at the state championships in Jackson, took second in the women’s giant slalom on Saturday with a time of 59.92 seconds.
“That was awesome, that was great,” Broncs coach Cody Hansen said.
The girls raced in the slalom on Friday, with Smith recording a 59.46 finish on her first run, but she was unable to finish her second run. Lily Steinberg placed 13th, Madison Kramer 14th, Annie Moll 20th, Ceci Bruno 29th and Brynn Crabtree 34th.
Travis D’Amours finished 10th in slalom for the boys, followed by Buck Milligan in 15th, Brett Lane in 18th, Adi Wetzler in 29th, Jack Stolte in 33rd and Lucas Milligan in 43rd. Owen Janssen had a 57.75 finish in his first run but did not finish his second.
Following Smith in the giant slalom on Saturday were Kramer in 12th, Moll in 31st, Bruno in 36th, Steinberg in 37th and Crabtree in 46th.
Janssen took 12th in giant slalom on Saturday, followed by D’Amours in 13th, Lane in 18th, Buck Milligan in 23rd, Stolte in 27th, Wetzler in 31st and Lucas Milligan in 37th.
Nordic skiers shine in Alaska
Lena Poduska of the Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Club took first place on Monday in the girls’ U16 7.5K race at the USSA Cross-Country Ski Junior National Championships in Fairbanks, Alaska. Poduska finished in 26:06.6, 52 seconds ahead of Ally Wheeler of Casper, who won the 5K and 10K at last month’s state high school championships in Jackson.
Lucas Wilmot took fifth in the boys’ U18 race, followed by Peter Warner in 13th and Sam Sinclair in 16th.
Nate Streubel took eighth in the boys’ U16 race, followed by Sam Hutchinson in 20th, Ryan Thompson in 36th and Colton Petsch in 41st.
Mason Wheeler took 19th in men’s U20.
Abby Murphy was 17th in girls’ U16 and Aurora Stiles was 26th in U18 girls.
The championships continue through Thursday.
Ski club racers compete in Colorado
Carey Ritter of the Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Club finished seventh in the women’s slalom last Thursday at the Colorado Ski Cup Devo in Beaver Creek, Colorado. Evalyn Wogoman finished 15th.
Noah Parazette took 14th in the men’s slalom, followed by Sam Clausen in 16th, Kye Bessette 22nd and Gus Clausen in 24th.
Freeskiers tame Big Mountain
Several members of the Jackson Hole Evolution and Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Club excelled in the IFSA Big Mountain National meet last weekend in Big Sky, Montana.
Declan Brewer of the Evolution finished second in 15-18 male ski; Miles Coleman was fourth; Wyatt Gentry fifth; and Jack Kilmain eighth.
Rigdon Hammond of the Evolution was third in 12-14 male ski.
Grace DeLauriers of the ski club was third in 15-18 female ski; Ainsley McBean of the Evolution was seventh.
Tina DeLauriers of the ski club was eighth in 12-14 female ski.
Tiernan Schuldt of the ski club was fifth in 15-18 male snowboard.
Jackson athletes among UW racers
The University of Wyoming women’s Nordic ski team placed second last week at the U.S. Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association Championships at Mammoth, California, while the men took third.
Two of the men’s finishers are from Jackson: Matthew Williams, a kinesiology major, placed 31st; Jamie Peacock, a physiology major, placed 40th for the Cowboys.
