Blood drive

Gillian Heller and Betsy Engle donate blood in 2018 at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church. Socializing is part of the joy of giving, donors say.

Vitalant is hosting its last blood drive of the year in a two-day drive next week.

Donors can sign up for times between 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday or 7:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday.

In addition to the warm fuzzies received for donating blood (and sugary or salty snacks given post-donation), donors will also receive a voucher for a free pint of Snake River Brewing beer.

These two-day drives typically collects between 130 and 200 units of blood, roughly equivalent to a pint apiece, some of which comes back to the community by way of transfusions at St. John’s Medical Center.

Blood donation is quick, less than 10 minutes. The automated machine donation takes a little bit longer, clocking in at around 25 minutes. Unlike having blood drawn for a health panel, donating blood does not require fasting, nor is it encouraged.

Sign up to give at BloodHero.com or call 877-258-4825. The drive will be held at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, 750 Seneca Lane.
