An Afton man fell asleep at the wheel of his pickup truck in the Snake River Canyon Saturday evening, partially closing the northbound lane for nearly three hours.

Wyoming Highway Patrol Trooper Tyler Smith said the man, in his late 70s, was cited for failure to maintain lane of travel when his southbound truck crossed the U.S. 89 center roadway line and hit the guard rail north of Alpine Junction.

WYDOT said the lane was blocked at 5:18 p.m. and was cleared at 8:20 p.m.

Smith said the driver wasn’t hurt, but his truck was likely totaled and the guardrail was damaged.

“We got lucky, nobody was hurt, thank goodness it wasn’t a work day,” Smith said.
