Obituary - Fred Peightal

Fred Peightal was an avid golfer.

A memorial service for Jackson resident Frederick “Fred” Martin Peightal, Jr. is scheduled for 1 p.m. Aug. 11 at St. John’s Episcopal Church. A reception at Orsetto Italian Bar and Eatery will follow.

Peightal died June 13 in Bermuda Dunes, California, following a cancer diagnosis May 10. He was 78.

His family provided the following.

Fred was born Aug. 21, 1940, in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, to Helen and Frederick M. Peightal Sr., who predeceased him.

If you met Fred you remembered him, because he lived life large as the firstborn, only son, a tall, handsome, star athlete and avid sports fan. Fred graduated from Loch Haven University and starred as quarterback beginning in his freshman year. He was inducted into the university’s hall of fame for leading his football teams to championship seasons.

Fred moved to Baltimore after graduating from college and began a teaching and coaching career. He left teaching and found his calling: sales and marketing. He climbed the corporate ladder at American Can Company and Kaiser Aluminum Chemical Corporation, retiring as the executive responsible for East Coast sales. He excelled at sales and loved his expense account, entertaining clients at the Masters and other PGA events, providing tickets to Baltimore Colts and Orioles games and college football games and hosting many evenings at fine restaurants.

After Fred retired in 1998 he and Mary, his wife, moved from Hunt Valley, Maryland, to Ocean City, Maryland. In January 1999 they began wintering in Palm Desert at Monterey Country Club. They moved to Bermuda Dunes in 2004. In 2005 they began spending their summers in Jackson Hole.

Fred’s lifelong passions were golf, football, fishing, friends and family. He was proud of his five holes-in-one and winning many golf tournaments at Eagle’s Nest Country Club, Monterey Country Club and Jackson Hole Golf and Tennis Club. Fred enjoyed working part time as a starter at Teton Pines Country Club and engaging in summer activities with his grandchildren.

Fred is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Mary S. Peightal; loving daughter Elizabeth A. Peightal, of Timonium, Maryland; devoted son Frederick (Daryl) M. Peightal III; adored grandchildren Theodore “Teddy,” Finley and Angus “Gus” Peightal, of Jackson Hole; loving sisters Cheryl (Robert) P. Ritchey and Barbara S. Purdy, of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania; and nephews Stephen (Ellen) Purdy, of Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, Robert (Kara) S. Ritchey, of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, and Jason (Staci) F. Ritchey, of Huntersville, North Carolina.
