The Rachel Carson Council welcomed Stephanie Murphy to its staff as a summer 2022 Stanback Fellow.
Murphy was selected from a competitive applicant pool of undergraduate and graduate students at Duke University to participate in the Stanback Fellowship Program. The fellowship provides students with environmental project-based learning experiences at national nonprofit environmental organizations in Washington, D.C., including the Rachel Carson Council.
The daughter of veteran national park employees at Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, Murphy was raised in Moose. She attended Jackson Hole High School, where she was in the Climbing Club, climbing at the rock gym and up the mountains in Grand Teton National Park.
Murphy frequently drove and hiked through the parks, searching for wildlife both for her parents’ work and for fun. She spent her summers canoeing around Leigh Lake at the base of Mount Moran, whitewater rafting the Snake River and picking huckleberries until her fingers were stained purple.
Murphy is pursuing a Master of Environmental Management with a concentration in environmental economics and policy at Duke University.
The Rachel Carson Council is the national environmental organization envisioned by Rachel Carson and founded in 1965. It educates, organizes and advocates for climate justice, environmental health and the promotion Carson’s environmental ethic of empathy for all living creatures.
